So I spent all of today reading. I mean all of today. I just sat there and read. I started and finished two books. One of them (Rainbow Boys by Alex Sanchez) was the first in a series. I read the book when I was like… 14 last time and so I remember the general premise but not the finer points of it so I decided to reread it since Dusty leant me the other two books in the series for me to read. I like the series but it definitely reminds me why I avoid the teen-novel-drama thing, or I space them out into regular intervals. Mostly because I can only suffer through so much humiliation with the characters before I feel just horrible for them.
The other book I read was one of the eleven books I checked out from the Library. It was The Death Collector by Justin Richards.
The Death Collector was good. Very teenage genre book so not that deep. The thing that I found myself liking about it was that even though the set the premise with two males (one about 15 and the other 25) with a girl nicely situated in the middle (age 18), the didn’t develop a romance in the story. In the end, they are all nice and happy friends, so they didn’t ruin a perfectly good plot by throwing in people being lovesick.
The book is set in Victorian London, following around a few characters (I also love multiple points of view, they make me happy). It starts with a dead man, returning home for tea. He goes to take his dog for a walk, and is followed for a short time by a pickpocket, who eventually picks the pocket of the other male lead, accidentally coming into possession of a certain burnt page that starts the whole mess of the book. He later picks the pocket of the female lead’s father. In the end, they all end up together, running through the British Museum and fighting Robot Dinosaurs. Another thing I liked is that in the 21st century, we take Dinosaurs and everything we know about them for granted but in the setting of Victorian England, they knew very little, so it was interesting to read about their confusion about facts that are so obvious to a 21st century reader.
