MY MOTHER HAS BROKEN HER ARM!
STUPID CATS
>.> I want to go home.
Prologue- Bearskin
We have not yet got so far as that yet. Thou must first make me clean.
After the seven years ended, he returned to the circle of stones, caked in mud and filth so thick he could hardly feel the strong wind that managed to find its way through the trees.
“I am here Devil! Come to honor your oath!” He yelled to the empty space. There was no reply, only more howling wind and the rumble of an approaching storm.
Despair welled in his chest as he slumped against one of the stones. He dropped to the ground, hands running over the bearskin that covered his form, hiding his humanity from view. Seven years of his life in the cursed skin and nothing to show for it now except for mud and bruises.
“Why despair fair soldier,” came a voice from above him. Looking up he caught sight of a red coat. “Do you give up so easily?”
“You trying to renege on our deal Satan?” he asked as the demon leapt from the stone to land before him, brushing off his pristine form.
“Our deal still stands for five months, three weeks, six days and four hours human,” the demon’s grin widened as he enumerated the time remaining. “And do not call me by Morningstar’s new name. He has no time to tempt foolish humans such as you.”
“Our deal ends today. Seven years have passed,” he snarled, stepping towards the demon, pleased when the demon took a step back. “Give me my prize and do not try to weasel your way out of your loss.”
“Seven times the world has circled the Sun. However your Kings and
“You are reneging!”
“Indeed I am not! You never asked me to specify what seven years I judge by.” The demon leapt to another rock in the circle.
“Then I ask you now devil. Do I have your word that in five months, three weeks, six days and four hours our deal is done?”
“Quite a mind for numbers,” the demon sat down on his rock, swinging his feet.
“Only when they concern me. And that is not an answer.”
“Yes. In five months, three weeks, six days and four hours, you will be released from our deal… And since I feel so guilty,” this earned a scoff. “Watch your voice soldier. I am giving you a gift.”
“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”
“More like a gift from the devil is still a gift. There is a thunderstorm brewing. Wash off what you can during your brief respite. Shave. Cut or whatever you feel you need. Perhaps you shall be as you were six years ago. Perhaps even seven if you scrub hard.”
“Promise? And this does not alter our deal?”
“I swear our deal is intact. The promised riches should you survive the next six months as the one called Bearskin will still be yours. You will not bathe. You will not shave. And in return, your bottomless pockets of gold will still surrender their wealth to you. Let us see if you can survive the extra six months. The despair almost overwhelmed you a mere moment ago.”
“Six months does not compare to seven years.”
“We shall see. Enjoy your shower soldier.” The demon smiled and leapt off the rock and into the woods.
Thunder boomed overhead. The first drops of rain may well have been poison. The mud was like armor so he scrubbed, violently. He saw skin for the first time in years. He tried to tear off the bearskin, but it had become interwoven in his own hair and half-hearted-beard years ago. He pulled a knife from his pants and cut, hacked and tore at his hair until it was scruffy and short and incredibly patchy.
He threw the bearskin to the ground when he could be free of it, keeping an eye on the storm as he stripped off the rest of his clothes to reach as much skin as possible. He continued to scrub. When he could see most of his skin he turned to his beard, shaving it off, nicking himself several times.
He looked almost human when the storm drew to a close. Passable. He quickly pulled his clothing back on, the rain having washed off layers of dirt. He pulled on the devil’s red coat and swung the bearskin around his shoulder as the rain slowed and stopped.
He tried to enjoy the last of the water as it slid from his skin to the forest ground beneath his feet. But it was short lived. Another six months. Another six months in the skin. At least he looked mostly human now. He had taken six and a half of the last seven years of his body off in half an hour. But six more months of bribing his way into hotel rooms if he was clean enough to manage the bribe. Six more months of having people look at him and glare and avoid him because he looked more monster than man.
He turned away from the circle of stones and headed out of the woods towards civilization. He didn’t head towards his hometown or towards the city of his betrothed, but the other direction. The girl would probably move on when he didn’t show up in the next few weeks anyway. Marrying for duty, no matter how noble, was no way for such a young girl. Especially when she was marrying a monster. In six months he would regain his youth, his handsome features. In six months, he would look human. But surely he would drag the bearskin with him inside, even if it did not weave into his hair, cover his skin in its musk.
So he was Bearskin for the next five months, three weeks, six days and three hours. He wasn’t even sure if he would respond to his given name anyway.
